A blowout brush is a barrel covered in bristles with a heater and a fan inside it, so the hair is dried in exactly the shape the brush is holding. One hand does the job that a dryer and a round brush do with two, which is why people who find blow-drying awkward get a better result from one almost immediately.
A barrel too small for the hair produces a curl that drops within the hour, because the weight of the hair pulls it out. A barrel too large on short hair cannot get close enough to the root to lift anything. Around 38–40 mm suits shoulder-length hair and is the general-purpose choice; shorter hair wants something narrower, and long or heavy hair is better served by a wider barrel used for smoothing and body rather than curl.
Brushes catch for two reasons: the section was too thick, or the barrel was turned at the root instead of at the ends. Keep sections about the width of the barrel and thin enough to see through, brush through slowly, and rotate only at the ends. If hair does wrap, stop and unwind in the opposite direction — pulling against a heated barrel is how hair breaks at the root.
It smooths and adds body; it does not straighten. On very curly hair it produces a looser, tidier curl pattern rather than a straight finish, and on long thick hair it is slower than a dryer because the air has to pass through the bristles. Used on damp rather than wet hair, at a middle temperature, it does the one job it is built for very well.
