A multistyler puts a heater and a fan in the handle and lets the attachment decide what the airflow does. Because the heat arrives through moving air rather than a plate pressed against the hair, the surface temperature is lower than a tong or an iron producing a similar shape — a real reduction in cuticle damage, though not an elimination of it.
The round bristled barrel is the everyday head: it lifts at the root and puts a soft bend in the ends in one pass, which is the job most people actually want. A smoothing head flattens the cuticle for shine on hair that is already nearly dry. A concentrator directs airflow down the shaft and is what you use for a fast rough-dry before any of the shaping starts.
Rough-dry to about eighty per cent first; a styling head used on soaking hair takes forever and tangles. Section the hair into pieces about the width of the barrel, work from root to tip slowly, rotate half a turn at the ends, then let each section cool before you touch it. The shape sets as the hair cools, not while it is hot, which is why a cool shot at the end saves more time than another pass of heat.
Fine or coloured hair belongs at the lowest setting, normal hair in the middle, and coarse hair at the top only for a single slow pass. If a style will not hold at a sensible temperature, the section is too thick — that is almost always the problem, and turning the heat up is the wrong answer to it.
