What an all-in-one styling system is doing

An all-in-one system is a high-speed motor and a heater in one handle, with heads that change what the airflow does. The curling attachments work on a piece of fluid dynamics rather than a hot surface: air leaving a curved barrel at speed stays attached to it and drags nearby air along, so the end of a section wraps itself around the barrel and dries in that shape. Nothing has to reach the temperature a curling tong does, which is why these systems are gentler in practice.

The heads that earn their place

The concentrator nozzle directs airflow down the shaft and, used with a brush, is what produces a smooth blow-dry; it is the head most people use most. A round volumising brush gives root lift in a single pass. The airflow barrels curl without a hot surface, and the diffuser matters enormously if your hair is curly and not at all if it is straight. Smoothing and flyaway heads work, slightly, on hair that is already dry.

The learning curve is real

Airflow curling needs hair at a specific dampness — damp, not wet — and sections small enough for the airflow to move them. Too much hair and nothing wraps; too wet and the curl never sets. It also does not hold well on heavy, dense, poker-straight hair, because there is not enough force to overcome the weight. None of that is a fault in a particular model; it is what the format can and cannot do.

Getting the most from it

Rough-dry to about eighty per cent before any shaping, section the hair and clip the rest out of the way, keep the tool moving rather than passing over the same piece repeatedly, and let each section cool before you touch it. Finish cool. Most of the damage people attribute to heat comes from the fourth pass over a section that was too thick for the first one.
